Prevalence Of Substance Use In The LGBTQ+ Community

Members of the LGBTQ community are statistically likely to develop substance use disorders, especially in adolescence.

While research is still ongoing, evidence suggests that these elevated rates of drug and alcohol addiction are likely the result of the stressors that the queer community is more likely to endure on a daily basis.

Factors that may contribute to these high rates include:

  • experiencing abuse
  • loss of community support
  • harassment
  • isolation
  • predatory marketing
  • lack of access to appropriate healthcare

These factors increase the risk that LGBTQ individuals will experience mental health disorders and not receive adequate treatment. Drug and alcohol use is a common form of self-medication.
