Ways to Access Free Addiction Treatment

People with financial barriers in Kentucky have an array of options for accessing low-cost or free treatment services, including Medicaid insurance coverage, payment assistance plans, and federal grant funds.

Kentucky Medicaid

Kentucky Medicaid is a state and federal program that provides healthcare for eligible, low-income individuals and families. This includes children, families, pregnant women, as well as elderly and disabled people. Eligibility is determined by factors such as family size and income.

Kentucky residents who qualify for Medicaid may use their insurance to cover the cost of substance use treatment services at programs that accept Kentucky Medicaid.

Payment Assistance Plans

People who don’t qualify for Kentucky Medicaid may inquire about using a payment assistance plan to help cover the cost of treatment. A payment plan may come in the form of a sliding scale based on the client’s income, household size, and other criteria.

While payment plans will typically not make drug addiction services free, they will greatly reduce the cost so that more people can get the help they need.

Federal Grant Funds

Additionally, there are federal and state grants for people with drug or alcohol addiction who aren’t eligible for Medicaid or Medicare and can’t afford private health insurance.

The Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant (SUBG) is a federal block grant that’s awarded to all 50 states in the country. In 2023, Kentucky received over $10 million in SUBG funding. These funds can only be used to help low-income and at-risk populations get the behavioral health services they need.
