6. Merit Resource Services, Kennewick, Washington

Merit Resource Services was founded in 1979 as the first outpatient addiction treatment provider in the lower Yakima Valley area. Since then, Merit has opened facilities in Benton, Kennewick, and Pasco counties. Treatment is available for adults, teens, and children facing substance use disorders.

This facility offers intensive outpatient and standard outpatient recovery programs, including telehealth options for native English and Spanish speakers.

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) consists of three-hour sessions three nights a week, for about six to eight weeks. The IOP also includes family counseling one night per week. After completing the IOP, clients step down to the standard outpatient program.

Standard outpatient treatment meets once or twice a week for about 90 minutes. Clients may also transition into a weekly or monthly program if they are awaiting a court-ordered two-year deferred prosecution or are participating in a drug court program.

7. Pierce County Alliance, Tacoma, Washington

Pierce County Alliance was started over 50 years ago to help people facing legal trouble due to substance use. The organization was one of the first felony drug court programs in the country.

Today, programs here include addiction treatment, including for gambling addiction, dual diagnosis care, domestic violence counseling, and more.

Pierce County Alliance’s outpatient treatment programs are available to any person age 18 or over. Certified substance abuse treatment professionals conduct comprehensive assessments and develop an individualized treatment plan for each client.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is also available where appropriate. MAT clients may select between an oral medication or IV administration. Treatment duration is normally at least 12 months but more commonly lasts 16 to 18 months depending on the individual’s needs and progress.
