It is not known whether Zubsolv directly causes anxiety in those who use the medication, but some people who take it have reported increased symptoms of anxiety. This may be due to the medication, the stress that comes from treating an opioid use disorder, or other mental and emotional factors.

Does Zubsolv Cause Anxiety?

Anxiety is not one of the side effects of Zubsolv, but some people using the medication have expressed increased problems with anxiety.

This may be due to a few factors, such as mental effects, abusing Zubsolv, or suddenly ceasing use of the medication.

How Common Is Anxiety While Using Zubsolv?

According to a 4-week clinical study testing Zubsolv, the rate of anxiety among participants was 12% (91 people).

This is a fairly low percentage, so it suggests that the chance of experiencing anxiety while using Zubsolv is low.

Of those 91 people, only 25 reported having high anxiety. The other participants had low to moderate anxiety.

What Causes Anxiety While Using Zubsolv?

It’s not known exactly what causes anxiety while using Zubsolv.

This anxiety could be directly related to the medication, or it could be an indication of mental and emotional stress from other factors.

Anxiety while taking Zubsolv may be a result of the stress and emotional upheaval of going through opioid dependence treatment.

When a person begins treatment for an opioid use disorder (OUD), they’re going to experience major changes in lifestyle, substance use, eating habits, sleep, and more.

Zubsolv has been known to produce the following physical and emotional responses:

  • sexual dysfunction
  • loss of appetite
  • insomnia
  • depression
  • mood swings

Any of these factors may contribute to greater feelings of anxiety.

This is why Zubsolv is best taken while under the care and support of an addiction treatment program such as outpatient rehab or medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Abusing Zubsolv May Cause Anxiety

A person is more likely to experience severe anxiety if the substance is abused.

If Zubsolv is chewed, crushed, snorted, or injected, this can result in serious withdrawal symptoms. The greatest risk of withdrawal comes with injecting Zubsolv.

This can cause a rush of buprenorphine to enter the system, creating an influx of opioids in the brain. When the drug begins to wear off, the body will go into withdrawal.

One of the primary concerns in opioid withdrawal is increased anxiety.

Suddenly Stopping Zubsolv May Cause Anxiety

Similar to abusing Zubsolv, suddenly ceasing use of the medication can result in serious withdrawal.

To safely stop using Zubsolv, a person should gradually taper off the medication under the direction of their doctor.

Because Zubsolv contains buprenorphine, stopping the use of an opioid medication will require a careful and maintained balance of the dose until a person can safely stop using it.

If Zubsolv is removed from the system too quickly, a person might experience heightened symptoms of anxiety.

Treating Anxiety While Using Zubsolv

If you’re experiencing anxiety while using Zubsolv within the context of an MAT program, there are a few primary ways you can treat your anxiety.

Reach Out For Support

First, speak with your focus groups, counselors, and medical professionals about your anxiety.

Chances are, there are other people in your program who are also facing anxiety or another issue related to mental health. Your peers and counselors are available for support and discussion.

Get Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many MAT programs are equipped to address co-occurring disorders with substance abuse, including anxiety. Speak with someone at the program who can practice dual diagnosis.

Dual diagnosis involves treating both the substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. If you’re dealing with anxiety throughout the treatment process, dual diagnosis methods can help.

Use An Anxiety Medication

You may also be able to take an anti-anxiety medication while in treatment. Some anti-anxiety medications are acceptable to use while taking Zubsolv, while others are not safe.

If medication is needed to manage anxiety, talk with your doctor before using an anxiety medication to assure it can be taken with Zubsolv.
