How To Access Free Addiction Treatment

There are several ways to get access to free drug and alcohol rehab services in the U.S. One way to find a facility is through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) treatment locator, which can filter results based on payment options and other factors.

SAMHSA also offers a block grant to all 50 states called the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant (SUBG). Approved rehab centers must use the funds to provide substance use treatments to people who cannot otherwise afford it.

Other ways to access free or reduced-cost drug rehab include:

  • using a government-funded health insurance plan such as Medicaid, Medicare, or TRICARE military insurance
  • attending a non-profit, donation-based, or faith-based program
  • obtaining a private scholarship to use for addiction treatment
  • attending a state-funded rehab center

Additionally, some facilities offer a sliding fee scale for financial assistance, which is based on income, household size, and other factors.

FAQs About Free Rehab Centers In The U.S.

Answers to a few commonly asked questions below may be able to further aid you in your search for the right treatment center for you or a loved one.

Not all rehab centers accept Medicaid, but many do. State-funded and/or government-funded facilities, in particular, are more likely to accept Medicaid insurance coverage.

Free rehab programs are more likely to have longer waiting lists than private rehab facilities. Because of the lack of cost, there are more people looking to access treatment.

One of the considerations people will need to make when choosing to attend a free drug treatment center is the possibility of a longer waiting time.

If you do not have eligibility for Medicaid or government grant funding, there are other alternatives to consider.

Most, if not all, treatment centers accept coverage from private insurance providers.

If private insurance is not an option, you can ask the treatment facility about payment assistance, such as a sliding fee scale, payment plan, or self-pay options.

There are also other options to consider, such as The Salvation Army, with various locations nationwide providing treatment services free of charge.
