Milestone Recovery is the only nonprofit providing medical detox in southern Maine and one of the only programs in the state that won’t turn someone away because of an inability to pay. Borden Cottage sits perched on a hillside in Camden and offers stunning views of Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills. With a maximum capacity of eight adults, it’s one of the most intimate residential treatment programs in New England. Every resident has a private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom in either the main house or one of the garden cottages. A renovated barn houses a wellness facility with a yoga studio, art studio, private theater, gym, and music studio.

The program has a strengths-based, person-centered clinical model that combines evidence-based therapy with comprehensive neuropsychological testing, psychiatric assessment, and individualized programming. Treatment focuses on early recovery, relapse prevention, and acute psychiatric stabilization for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Borden integrates outdoor and recreational activities throughout, including sailing, kayaking, hiking in the Camden Hills, cycling, and trail running.

Casco Bay Recovery is one of the more accessible full-continuum programs in southern Maine. The program is notable for its range of specialized populations, offering separate tracks for men, women, and young adults ages 18 to 30, with the young adult program incorporating life skills development, money management, and self-sufficiency training alongside clinical treatment.

Clinical offerings include CBT, motivational interviewing, trauma-related counseling, REBT, 12-step facilitation, and MOUD, including Suboxone, buprenorphine, and methadone.

The program is LGBTQIA-affirming, serves seniors, and accepts IHS/Tribal/Urban funds alongside Medicaid and private insurance, making it one of the more accessible programs in Portland. Sober living and aftercare support are available post-discharge.

Pine Tree Recovery Center holds the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and is fully licensed by the State of Maine, placing it among the most credentialed programs in the region. Part of the Guardian Recovery Network, the facility offers detox and IOP in a home-style setting designed for comfort with luxury accommodations and a team of licensed physicians and nursing staff.

Therapies include CBT, motivational interviewing, DBT, and individual, group, and family counseling in addition to MOUD and holistic modalities. Aftercare planning is built into the program from the start.

Liberty Bay Recovery Center offers a full continuum of care in Portland, with most treatment plans running approximately 90 days across its detox, residential, and outpatient levels. The program combines evidence-based clinical therapies with holistic modalities, and licensed clinicians, many of whom are in recovery themselves, guide treatment. Personalized care plans feature CBT, trauma therapy, MOUD, yoga, and meditation, as well as family therapy.

There’s also equine-assisted therapy and a farm environment that supports introspection and skill development. St. Francis Recovery Center is operated by Catholic Charities Maine and housed in a former convent in Auburn. It offers a six-week men’s residential program for adults 18 and older with substance use and co-occurring disorders. The setting provides private and shared rooms in a secure, confidential environment with 24-hour staff. Programming includes individual and group counseling, family education, and life skills development, with staff helping residents access community resources and navigate ongoing court involvement, probationary conditions, and child protective matters.

Despite being run under Catholic Charities, the program does not require clients to be Catholic. The combination of MaineCare, Medicare, and TRICARE acceptance makes St. Francis one of the most financially accessible residential programs in central Maine.

Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC) is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) with 27 locations across Northern Maine. The residential facility in Presque Isle is the most significant new residential treatment resource in Aroostook County in years. Opened in December 2023, the program replaced a 12-bed facility in Limestone and expanded residential capacity to 18 beds, all private rooms, in a location directly adjacent to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital.

The program offers 30 to 45 days of intensive, structured 24/7 residential treatment with daily individual and group therapy, Sunday family treatment sessions, seven hours of group programming daily, skill-building activities, and weekly community provider coordination meetings. As a CCBHC, AMHC provides integrated mental health and substance use treatment and accepts MaineCare and Medicare. This makes it the primary residential treatment resource for the thousands of residents in Aroostook County who need accessible, publicly funded care.

MaineGeneral Health’s Addiction Medicine practice in Waterville is part of one of Maine’s largest integrated health systems and operates under a harm reduction-first philosophy. Staff treat patients with dignity and build individualized plans around diagnosis, treatment, and relapse prevention. The practice serves adults aged 18 and older.

Outpatient services include IOP for substance use disorder (Monday through Friday), MOUD including buprenorphine and naltrexone, individual and group counseling, family therapy, anger management, and MOUD-specific groups. The practice coordinates with primary care providers across and outside the MaineGeneral system and includes naloxone education and overdose prevention. As a hospital-based outpatient program, MaineGeneral Addiction Medicine connects patients to the full range of MaineGeneral’s medical resources.

Breaking the Cycle opened in 2020 as a sober house for women in Millinocket. It has since evolved into a fully licensed women’s treatment facility with on-site clinicians, a medical director, and 24-hour staffing. Founded and led by women in long-term recovery from the Katahdin Region, the program focuses on addressing the gaps between detox, residential treatment, and independent living in one of Maine’s most underserved rural areas.

Program length is typically at least six months, and programming draws from 12-step principles and includes individual counseling, clinical groups, life skills, spirituality groups, community integration, and Wellbriety meetings. Children may visit regularly, with a family room available for overnight stays on weekends and holidays, and the program actively supports family reunification. Residents receive help with court-related matters, probationary conditions, child protective involvement, housing, education, and employment.
