Locating affordable substance abuse treatment in Ohio can seem like an overwhelming task. This list includes five free or low-cost drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation centers in the state.

Free Ohio Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers

The substance abuse rates in Ohio are shockingly high. Overdose deaths involving opioids in Ohio were 39% higher than the 2018 national average. Ohio also reported data for opioid-related overdoses in 2017 and 2018 that placed them in the top five highest in the country.

Funding reports from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) revealed that Ohio received federal grants totaling more than $95 million to be used for substance abuse treatment. These grants were in addition to the $71 million that the state received for substance abuse overall.

The state is diligently working to provide effective interventions and substance abuse treatment options to the thousands in the state that need addiction rehabilitation services. Increasing access to treatment is one of the many steps they are taking.

The list of funded, free, or low-cost substance abuse treatment options is constantly changing. Currently, the following is a list of affordable treatment options in Ohio.

1. Edwin Shaw Rehab Center

As part of the Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital, the Edwin Shaw Rehab Center offers outpatient and MAT services to those in need of substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation. Locations for treatment include Avon, Beachwood, and Edwin Shaw.

The substance abuse programs offered through Edwin Shaw are typically paid for by insurance. However, for those who are uninsured or meet the criteria for financial need, there are assistance programs available through both the hospital and federal funds.

This could make substance abuse treatment rehabilitation services low-cost or free.

2. Clermont Recovery Center for Substance Abuse

Clermont Recovery Center is part of the Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Sciences Network. Clermont offers substance abuse treatment to people of all ages in an outpatient setting. They also offer aftercare, intervention, and prevention services.

The substance abuse treatment program at Clermont acknowledges that addiction treatment should be specific to the needs of each person, and offers treatment in the following options:

  • outpatient drug and alcohol treatment
  • intensive outpatient (IOP) services
  • medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • co-occurring diagnosis mental health program options
  • alternative sentencing center
  • home-based counseling (for adolescents)
  • day treatment (for adolescents)

Transitional and permanent living arrangements are offered to clients who have completed rehabilitation and are still in need of some assistance before returning to their communities. Case managers work with each person receiving treatment to make sure they locate housing that meets their needs after discharge.

Services offered through Clermont Recovery are offered to those in need at little to no cost to them. Substance abuse treatment is often free to those who show an inability to pay.

3. New Directions Youth Residential Treatment

New Directions provides gender-specific substance abuse treatment for young men and women. Individualized care plans include long-term goals for abstinence from drugs and alcohol, academic goals, and healthy relationship building.

New Directions uses evidence and outcome-based intervention methods for substance abuse treatment, such as:

  • cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • family systems interventions
  • trauma therapy
  • strengths based counseling
  • motivational interviewing techniques

Services rendered at New Directions are payable by insurance or sliding scales based on income. There are financial plans and assistance services available if there is an inability to pay.

4. Sojourner Recovery Services

Sojourner Recovery uses comprehensive care to treat substance abuse in a way that addresses the many ways that addiction affects the life of the person and those close to them.

A number of the intervention and counseling methods of treatment offered at Sojourner include:

  • individual counseling
  • group therapy
  • family sessions
  • crisis services
  • co-occurring disorder treatment
  • medication-assisted treatment (MAT)

These methods are paired with proven drug and alcohol rehabilitation therapy techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement, Stages of Change, and Seven Challenges.

Recently, Sojourner has also expanded its addiction treatment services to include a residential substance abuse, 16-bed female facility in Eaton, Ohio. This location is in addition to the men’s residential location and a female facility that allows children to remain onsite with their mother.

Medicaid is accepted for substance abuse treatment services at Sojourner, and an income-based sliding scale is used for self-pay clients that show a need for financial assistance.

5. Southeast, Inc.

Southeast, Inc. has multiple systems of care to provide comprehensive care to those in need of substance abuse and mental health treatment.

They offer drug and alcohol rehabilitation to clients at the following inpatient locations:

  • Redmond House

Southeast, Inc. also has outpatient substance abuse services and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs for individuals. Each person seeking addiction rehabilitation is assessed for the level of care needed, and treatment plans are established based on results.

All programs at Southeast, Inc. are provided to clients regardless of ability to pay. Sliding scales and funding are used to offset the cost of treatment for those who meet the criteria.
